Why are Asian pears mistaken for apples?

Asian pears are often mistaken for apples due to their apple shape and crunchy, non-gritty texture. They are available July through October, although pears from storage are available through the spring. Other varieties of tree-ripened pears have a coarse, gritty texture when canned. Pick pears when they are full size but firm (green). Hold them up to two weeks in the refrigerator. Then allow them to ripen at room temperature.
