Are canned foods exposed to flood waters safe to eat?

Rating: 100

Flood water carries dangerous bacteria. Use EXTREME care in cleaning products that have been in flood water. If you have any concern about cleanliness, discard the canned food. Commercially canned foods that have lids than can be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized are safe to use after a flood. Home canned foods are safe to use after a flood if the jar and seal are intact. Remove rings if they were left on jars after canning. Wash jars and cans in hot soapy water and rinse in a solution of 1 Tablespoon chlorine bleach to one gallon of water. PREPARED BY: Angela M.
