Should the pressure gaskets or sealing rings for canners be lubricated?

Rating: 100

Gaskets or sealing rings for new model canners are pre-lubricated before packaging and need to be lubricated only when the canner lid becomes difficult to open or close. Replacement gaskets for older model canners are not pre-lubricated and will need to be lubricated before the first use and again when the lid becomes difficult to open or close. Use a very light coating of vegetable oil. Frequent or heaving oiling is undesirable since it may cause the sealing ring to swell and not fit or cause it to deteriorate rapidly. Follow the directions that come with replacement sealing rings regarding oiling.
