How do I safely prepare egg nog?

Cooked Egg Nog (1-1/2 quarts or 12 one-half cup servings)
6 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
1 teaspoon vanilla
In a large saucepan, beat together eggs, sugar, and salt. Stir in 2 cups of the milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thick enough to coat a metal spoon with a thick film and it reaches at least 160 degrees F. Remove from the heat. Stir in the remaining 2 cups milk and vanillla. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, seeral hours or overnight. Just before serving pour into a bowl or pitcher. Serve immediately.
