Does a bus driver have to change her shirt when she comes to work in the food service area?
Foodservice workers must wear clean outer clothing to prevent
contamination of food, equipment, utensils, linens, and single-service
and single-use articles. While driving the bus, the shirt would probably
get dirty. The policy should be that the worker must change their shirt
when they arrive to work. Many operations prohibit workers from wearing
their uniforms to work. All employees are required to change into their
uniform when they get to the site.
Dirty clothing might harbor diseases that are transmissible through
food. Foodservice workers who inadvertently touch their dirty clothing
may contaminate their hands. This could result in contamination of the
food being prepared. Food may also be contaminated through direct
contact with dirty clothing. In addition, workers wearing dirty clothes
send a negative message to consumers about the level of sanitation in
the establishment.
