What causes mold to form on the outside of canning jars during storage?

Rating: 83

If the outside of the canning jar develops mold during storage, inspect to see on what surfaces the mold is growing. If mold is in the lid area, then discard the food. If mold is on another area, wash the jar with hot soapy water, rinse and dry. Mold could mean that the canned foods are stored in a damp place and/or that particles of food were on the outside of the jar when stored. Before placing home canned foods in the storage space, take off the rings, wash and dry jars.
