Is it safe to use refrigerator shelves as outdoor grills?

Rating: 90

There are several reasons not to use old or new refrigerator shelves as cooking surfaces over a fire. Most shelves are painted aluminum or steel. They are not treated to withstand heat which could cause chipping or peeling with the paint being deposited on the food. Some shelves are galvanized with a coating of zinc and is toxic.
